Cooking for friends…….

Friends invited us to join them for a cooking demonstration at Apron’s recently.  This particular one was presented by the Apron’s staff chef’s and was titled “Sonoma vs. Napa.”  The demonstration was entertaining, maybe a little too entertaining as I did not take notes which I realized later,  can be incredibly handy when you try to make any of the recipes.  The chefs are generous … Continue reading Cooking for friends…….

DC’s Zaytinya…..

We had an exceptional experience at this restaurant in DC a couple years ago. I remember my immediate impression upon arriving in the restaurant was not wonderful.  It was crowded and rather loud but once seated and into reading the menu it became quite comfortable, interesting and totally fun.  We all agreed we’d go back in an instant.  There were so many intriguing items … Continue reading DC’s Zaytinya…..

A California Malbec…..

Last night’s wine was a 2007 Chappellet Malbec Napa Valley purchased at the winery.  Carissa Chappellet’s artwork titled “Fineus Dei” labels the bottle.  It’s an unusual drawing that is sophisticated, colorful, and fun.  It is one of the illustrations in her book ” Dragons of Pritchard Hill”. We enjoyed the wine with a dinner of  Risotto with Butternut Squash, Leeks and Basil. Our daughter Allie … Continue reading A California Malbec…..

A wine dinner for 16…….

I’m not a big lover of wine dinners. I think of wine dinners as stuffy, snobby affairs that require you to stand or sit still only to be interrupted from interesting conversation to listen to someone who, too easily, can drone on interminably about what’s in your glass.  The dinners are often too focused on trying to educate or,  just as often,  lack organization and … Continue reading A wine dinner for 16…….

Out of the recycle bin……

I rescued a few bottles from this week’s recycle bin. I emailed John this photo of them hoping he would offer up some notes on one or two of these.  His response is below.  Debbe The Urban Eco is a Malbec-Tempranillo blend from Argentina that delivers a great PQR. Lots of up front fruit and flavor fo a modest price. Bedrock Vineyards is a relatively … Continue reading Out of the recycle bin……

Summer travels…….

Good friends of ours had a wonderful adventure this summer leasing a small motor home to travel through Washington and Oregon with their young son.  John shared some winery recommendations for their trip and Robert was kind enough to report back on their adventures in the northwest wine country. Parker inspecting the grapes at Sokol Blosser “Your recommendations for visiting wineries were spot-on. From your … Continue reading Summer travels…….
