Oh those Reds!

Hourglass Winery currently has a very utilitarian look to it as one arrives at the entrance. The property was caught in the Glass Fire of 2020. The guest house and out buildings on the property were lost and the wine making facility had to be significantly rebuilt. Thankfully the extensive cave system saved the wine inventory from demise.

Hourglass is located off Silverado Trail in the Napa Valley. It has two estate vineyards (24 acres) planted with all five red Bordeaux varieties.

The entrance is a bit funky fun.

The extent of the cave seems endless.

The tastings are held deep in the cave system in a unique room that rock was blown out of and left in its craggy form. It’s strikingly beautiful.

We were fortunate to have had two hosts for our tasting – Ian and Marybeth both of whom have been associated with Hourglass for years. Marybeth grew up in the valley and her knowledge of the area is invaluable. She has seen first hand the development of Napa Valley, its characters, and its wine.

Marybeth shared with us great notes on the wines, their clones and how they mature. We tasted: 2025 Hourglass Sauvignon Blanc, 2023 Hourglass Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, 2022 Blueline Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, 2023 Blueline Estate 36 Red Wine, 2024 Blueline Estate Cabernet Franc, 2023 Blueline Estate Merlot, and 2025 Hourglass Rose Wine. The Rose surprised all of us. It was deliciously different and the reds, well as you would expect, were full bodied, intense, luscious wines characteristic of winemaker Tony Biagi.

Those funky fun front doors from inside!

Hourglass is exceptional. The wine and the hospitality make you just want more of both! Put this on your list of top wineries in Napa Valley to visit on your next trip.

Many, many thanks to Ian and Marybeth for such a memorable, outstanding tasting!

Salud!
