A Taste of Shafer…….

From land that has been producing grapes since 1880 in the Napa Valley, one of the world’s greatest wineries has called it theirs since 1972 – Shafer. Robert Parker is responsible for giving the winery that title. I know many would agree!

We visited the winery just after Christmas. It’s wise to book your visit well in advance. Tasting appointments are very limited to enable Shafer’s hosts to give guests their full attention while offering them the time to truly enjoy the property and the wine.

The interior spaces are beautifully appointed, inviting and comfortable. Hosts are extremely gracious and knowledgeable. Our host Luke Christian was that and more, leading engaging conversation throughout our visit.

Our tasting was paired with a selection of exceptional appetizers prepared by a local chef rather than a charcuterie which we were expecting. They were amazing! I understand Shafer now plans to have these on their tasting menu and will be making changes to the offerings seasonally.

A 2024 “Red Shoulder Ranch” Chardonnay led off the tasting followed by the 2022 TD-9 Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2022 One Point Five Cabernet, and the 2022 Relentless. And…just to top it off we tasted our daughter’s favorite – the 2018 Hillside Select. It is honestly extremely difficult to choose a favorite (and then why would you when you are tasting such a line up of noteworthy wines). I had one though. The 2022 Relentless stood out for me.

Tasting such elegant, rich wines while hearing the stories of Shafer – the family, the land, and the winemaker made for a perfectly balanced and totally enjoyable visit. Many, many thanks to our host Luke.

Salud!

  1. Very enticing review! We’ll add a Shafer tasting to our expected 2026 visit. Been way too long. Happy belated New Year.
